Why Choose Swedish Hospital's Family Medicine Residency?

Choosing Swedish Hospital means choosing to train in a program that is rooted in the care of the underserved, whose mission is to ensure high value healthcare is accessible to all patients, and who believe that resident wellness and support is as important as the care we provide to our patients.  You will discover the broad breadth of clinical pathology seen in your inpatient training experience at a safety-net community hospital and our outpatient continuity experience centered at Erie Family Health Center Foster Avenue Clinic – a federally qualified health center. 

Your training will start with a strong foundation in hospital medicine and will gradually advance to more time spent gaining skills and expertise in the outpatient clinic by caring for your own panel of patients.  By 3rd year of residency, the vast majority of training is dedicated to learning family medicine in the context of your outpatient clinic to ensure you are prepared for independent practice.

Our patient population is diverse in ethnicity, religion, socio-economic background, gender identity, disability, sexual orientation, age, country of origin and clinical pathology. You will see a wide variety of clinical cases here at Swedish hospital and gain the expertise needed to be a broad-scope, community focused family physician. This diversity is reflected in our staff, more than 50% of whom live within a five-mile radius of the hospital. Our staff speaks over 40 languages and patients can access telephone translation of more than 240 languages, including sign language via video remote interpretation, 24 hours a day.

We're Busy

In 2020, we delivered 2,008 babies, saw 45,073 patients in the emergency room, performed 12,354 surgical procedures, admitted 11,501 patients and saw 269,672 patients in our clinics.

Now is a great time to be a Family Physician at Swedish Hospital – there is a huge volume of outpatient appointments and we are looking to recruit and retain doctors after residency to meet this need.
